About Brandy

Brandy is a master' s-level practicum student in the Counselor Education Plus—LPC program at the University of St Thomas. She is also a certified teacher and professional school counselor. By prioritizing emotional well-being, resilience, and open communication, Brandy strives to empower young individuals and their families to navigate challenges, develop healthy relationships, and achieve their full potential.

Brandy’s interest in mental health began while working at a psycho-social day treatment facility in South Texas. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in psychology, she worked as a case manager for a mental health facility and then on the Assertive Community Treatment team in Houston, managing medications and mental health services for community-based clients suffering from moderate to severe mental health challenges. While working with the ACT team, Brandy obtained a teaching certification and began teaching in 2002. Brandy discovered her calling through interactions with her students. A pivotal moment came when a troubled child shared his story, leading Brandy to realize her true passion for helping children make sense of their experiences. She returned to school to get her M.Ed. in school counseling.

In addition to the LPC program studies, Brandy has participated in various professional trainings, including suicidal ideation, positive behavior interventions, Love and Logic discipline practices, and restorative interactions. She has completed 30 hours of training in trauma-informed science-focused therapy through Starr Commonwealth.

Brandy utilizes play, cognitive behavioral, and sensory-based interventions to address issues such as anxiety, grief, divorce, and trauma. Her work includes providing psychosocial education on emotional regulation, social skills, and self-esteem. She facilitates small group sessions focusing on impulsivity, leadership, coping skills, anxiety, boundary setting, and conflict resolution. Additionally, Brandy conducts behavioral observations and intervention planning in school. She collaborates with teachers, parents, school counselors, and mental health professionals to optimize continuity of support.

With over 20 years of experience working with children, she aims to provide evidence-based interventions that empower individuals and their families. She currently serves as a counselor at Memorial Drive Elementary, where she continues to positively impact her students' lives. In her free time, Brandy enjoys gardening, cooking, and caring for her 8 animals.
